Steam Model Trains

Written by steamtrainengines.com

Few things can evoke memories of a much simpler time in the past than the sight of a steam train. Having made such an undeniably significant contribution to modern civilization as we know it, steam trains speak volumes of the glorious era when they once ruled the land.

Sadly, steam trains have all but disappeared from the present day landscape. Many faster, cheaper and more efficient means of locomotion have risen up over the years to take the place of the steam train, and today only a few select historical tours throughout the country retain working examples of this technological marvel of years past.

Fortunately, there is a way that you can relive those glorious years of railway history right in your own home and that is with steam model trains.

One of the most popular types of model kits available on the market, steam model trains have enjoyed consistently brisk sales ever since the first “carpet railways” became available back in the 1840s.

It seems that there is something about steam model trains that have made them perennial favorites for kids of all ages as well as adults. In fact, it would not be unusual for a person to have a fascination for steam model trains as a child and carry that passion with them until they grow up. Many adult men and women have been known to keep and maintain the steam model train set that they grew up with, and pass them along to their children as soon as they are old enough to manage it themselves. And as you can imagine, the prices of antique steam model trains on the used market can be quite astronomical, costing hundreds or even thousands of dollars and maybe even more.

Make no mistake: while they are simply recreations of the real things, steam model trains are definitely not toys by any means, nor should they even be compared to the toy trains that you normally find in department stores or toy stores. The level of craftsmanship and accuracy is often stunning, and some of the kits can be quite expensive. And while building steam model trains is just a hobby for some people, there are many who take it quite seriously and spend significant amounts of time, money and effort into working on them.

Far beyond a simple child’s toy, steam model trains offer a glimpse into one of the most colorful and significant periods in man’s history.
