The Aerolite was built as a 2-2-2 tank locomotive in 1869, then later rebuilt and enlarged in 1886, 1892 and 1902. The locomotive was fitted with compound cylinders and and a 4-2-2T wheel arrangement in 1892 with the steam been taken to a single high pressure cylinder that was thirteen inches and diameter and then on to a second low pressure cylinder of eighteen and a half inches in diameter. To make space for a larger coal bunker, the wheel arrangement was changed to 2-2-4 in 1902.
