Mixed Traffic Tender Locomotive - 1939 - N84 607

The steam locomotive 607 is one of the largest ever built in Britain and is one of 24 that were built in Warrington, Cheshire, by the Vulcan Foundry for service in China. It was designed by Colonel K Cantlie, technical advisor to the Chinese Ministry of Railways.

The 607 was specifically designed with a large firebox for burning China's low grade coal and low axel loads, with 4-8-4 wheel configurations popular in the USA, to navigate steep inclines and lightweight bridges that were to be found on the Canton to Hankow and Nanking to Shanghai lines where it would run.
