Wren 1887

Written by steamtrainengines.com

Wren Steam Locomotive 1887 0-4-0 Saddle Tank Locomotive, Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway, UK.

Wren is the last surviving example of 8 small locomotives that were originally used on the narrow gauge 16 inch internal rail network at the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway locomotive works in Horwich.

This was one of the first of three such steam locomotives built at Horwich by Beyer, Peacock and Company in Manchester.

The internal rail network at Horwich was used for carrying heavy loads around the plant, and sometimes for carrying workers' wages. Wren was kept in service until 1957, after which it was used as a stand-by for its new diesel replacement.
